Clean Fuels Fund supports developer of metallurgical coal substitute

The Government of Canada Clean Fuels Fund has pledged $1.43 million to CHAR Technologies, developer of a high temperature pyrolysis (HTP) technology for converting wood and other organic wastes to renewable natural gas and CleanFyre-branded biocarbon, a carbon-neutral alternative to metallurgical coal used in steel production. The funding supports a feasibility study to assess the engineering and design work needed to build a commercial-scale operation in Terrace, British Columbia.
Organic feedstock are processed in a high temperature, oxygen-free environment, yielding biocarbon, renewable natural gas and hydrogen-rich syngas.
“The contribution demonstrates trust in our expertise deploying clean energy solutions [and] highlights Canada’s dedication towards supporting innovative projects that address climate change,” says CHAR CEO Andrew White.
“The Governments of Canada and British Columbia are committed to working together to advance large-scale clean technology projects needed to anchor the sector, decarbonize large industry and bring extensive global project experience to the Province,” affirms Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson.
